Eight to twelve people who meet on a regular basis for the purpose of growing in their Christian faith. Why should I join a community group? Community groups provide an ideal context to build relationships with others who share similar interests and concerns and to understand and apply biblical truths to your life in order to know and love God more. All community groups share some similarities, but each group takes on its own personality based upon members’ interests, the curriculum studied, and the developmental stages each group goes through. When and where do groups meet? Most community groups meet in the evening either weekly or bi-weekly in the home of one of the members. Some groups meet at the church during one of the service times. Each group addresses this issue according to their individual needs. What happens at a community group meeting? Groups are encouraged to develop a plan which is designed to clarify expectations and keep the group on track. Group meetings include bible study, prayer, sharing, food and fun. Serving the church and the community is also an important part of group life. What if I’m a small group skeptic? Christ calls Christians to a life-long journey of faith. Christ never intended this journey to be traveled alone. Because the journey seems to be contested every step of the way with conflict and temptation, Christians need each other. Being in a community group provides companionship and community for the journey. (Acts 2:42-47; Hebrews 10:24-25; Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 4:2, 32) We encourage you to visit a group one or twice to determine if the group is a good fit for you. If the group fits, the commitment is typically for one year (September to May) and then if the group decides to continue a re-commitment will be asked for. If for some reason the group does not work for you, please contact Allison at 303-730-1874 and we will try and find a new group for you. You begin by filling out a small group interest form and returning it to the community group table, or by contacting Allison at 303-730-1874. We will then either place you into an existing group or try and form a new one. By the way we do have more people looking for groups than we have leaders, so please prayerfully consider leadership especially if you have community group leadership experience. Who can lead a community group? Almost anyone at Highline can lead one of our community groups. Those interested in leading a group will meet with one of the Community Group leadership team members who will ask about your conversion experience as well as any previous experience leading or participating in a community group. In addition, you will be provided with ongoing leadership training and support. It is a great ministry opportunity . . . ask any community group leader. |
